In an existing structure

Step 1: Complete State Requirements

1. Register your business with the Florida Department of State. This link provides a step-by-step process for forming a business and registration.  
2. If your business sells food, obtain a permit from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Step 2: Apply for a Local Business Tax Receipt (formerly an Occupational License)

1. Fill out this form. 
2. Take the form to the Wakulla County Planning Department (3093 Crawfordville Highway, Crawfordville, FL 32327) where you will pay a $20 fee. As an alternative, you can also mail in the form along with a check to the address at the top of the form. 
3. The application is reviewed by the Planning Department and signed if approved. Sometimes conditions may be noted. 

Step 3: Building Department Review

1. Take the signed, approved form right next door to the Building Department for review by the Building Official. 
2. If the building is operating as a commercial building and there is a change in the use, it may require an inspection before approval. There is a cost of $80 for the Change of Use Inspection (if required).
3. The Building Official will issue a permit number if required and sign, if approved. 

Step 4: Apply for a Business License

1. Take the approved Local Business Tax Receipt to the Wakulla County Tax Collector's Office (202 Ochlocknee Street - Crawfordville, FL 32327) to apply for a one-year license. 
2. Pay a $35 annual fee. On April 1 of each year, the price is reduced to $17.50 and is valid through September 30. Renewal notices are mailed out to all businesses in July/August. 
3. If you are using the name of your business (an LLC or other name that is not inclusive of your first and last name), the name must first be registered with the Department of State, Division of Corporations (same step covered under State Requirements.)
